USS Pinckney Awarded USS Arizona Memorial Trophy
It’s not too shabby to come home from a seven-month deployment only to be given a prestigious award upon pulling into homeport. Sailors aboard guided-missile destroyer USS Pinckney (DDG 91) were met pierside by VADM Richard Hunt on Feb. 27 at Naval Base San Diego to accept the USS Arizona Memorial Trophy.
This biennial award is presented to a ship regarded as the most combat-ready ship in the Surface Force.
USS Pinckney demonstrated the greatest combat readiness in strike warfare, surface fire support and anti-surface warfare during the 2009 and 2010 cycle.
Only one ship is awarded the trophy every two years and there’s no specific training to prepare for its selection.
USS Pinckney was deployed to the Western Pacific and U.S. Central Command Area of Responsibility with aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) as part of Carrier Strike Group 3.
