Ship CO Named “Best Mom” in San Diego

Juggling parenthood and her position as the commanding officer of USS Kidd (DDG 100) keeps CDR Jennifer Ellinger pretty busy. But a recent award naming her a “Best Mom” reminded CDR Ellinger that her efforts don’t go unrecognized.

Nominated by her daughter in middle school, CDR Ellinger was among the finalists in the Time Warner Cable Best Moms Contest in San Diego, Calif.

Now in its 11th year, the contest invites students from grades 4 through12 to celebrate the unique qualities that make mothers special and share their own stories of how their mom is a “Best Mom.” Participating students wrote essays or created a short video describing why their mom should be honored as one of the best in San Diego. Judges from Time Warner Cable and representatives from the local community reviewed all essay and video entries, and up to 50 San Diego-area moms were selected as Best Moms. They, along with their student contest entrants were honored at an awards luncheon on Mother’s Day weekend. One student from each age category—elementary, middle and high school—was selected from the Best Mom submission honorees. Student winners received a Sony Tablet S and his/her teacher won a $250 gift card for school supplies.

The Time Warner Cable Best Moms Contest encourages students to tell their personal stories using basic science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills such as computer literacy (all essay entries are required to be typed) and introductory video production.
