Around the World in 259 Days

Completing a nine-month deployment, the guided missile cruiser USS Cape St. George (CG 71) returned to Naval Base San Diego Aug. 22 after circumnavigating the globe. The ship passed through the U.S. 5th, 6th and 7th Fleet areas of responsibility and both the Suez and Panama canals. Here’s a look at their notable accomplishments during deployment.

While at sea:
·         Completed 259 days deployed (over 230 at sea), with 105 days directly supporting Operation 
          Enduring Freedom

·         Traveled more than 70,000 nautical miles (equivalent of 3.5 times around the earth at the
          equator)

Flight operations:
·         More than 3,000 safe helicopter launches and recoveries
·         Embarked helicopter detachment flew approx. 350 sorties, completing more than 1,140 flight 
          hours

Port visits:
·         Pattaya, Thailand
·        
Manama, Bahrain
·        
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
·        
Valletta, Malta
·        
Key West, Fla.

Professional achievements during deployment:
·         60 petty officers and chiefs were advanced
·         Over 130 Sailors earned Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS) qualifications
