Culinary Specialists Bake Their Way to Success

They might not be mom’s homemade chocolate chip cookies, but… they might be even better. Navy Culinary Specialists (CSs) are an integral part of Sailors’ readiness and morale while onboard a ship. Being tasked with feeding thousands of Sailors and Marines three meals a day can be a daunting and endless task, but in doing so, CSs directly impact the crew’s quality of life.

To keep their kitchen skills sharp and further their culinary training, CSs from various Surface Navy ships across the U.S. Pacific Fleet recently completed a baking course at the San Diego Culinary Institute (SDCI) in La Mesa, Calif. CSs sampled their own sweets and offered their baked goods to other full-time SDCI students during their graduation on Sept. 21. The one-week class is held quarterly and is designed to teach techniques in various cooking methods.
