SURFPAC Appoints New Surface Force Ombudsman
Alicia Oconer was raised in Port Orchard, Wash. in a Navy family and has continued that journey through her 20 years of marriage. Alicia and her husband Nelson, currently stationed on USS Makin Island (LHD 8), have two children. While her husband was stationed in Misawa, Japan in March 1996, Alicia worked as a family child care provider as well as the supervisory club operations assistant for the Non-Commissioned Officers’ Club on Misawa Air Base.
Upon returning to the U.S. with her family on orders to Navy Recruiting District Portland (living in Provo, Utah) in 1999, Alicia continued her career as a family child care provider and also became Navy Recruiting District Portland’s Ombudsman for the Red Rock Zone from December 2000 through July 2002.
In November 2002, Alicia once again decided to pursue involvement within the community and her husband’s command, USS Milius (DDG 69). She served as the command ombudsman for three consecutive years. Alicia has had the pleasure and honor of serving three Milius Commanding Officers. During this time she also volunteered at her children’s elementary school once a week, where she taught and provided supplies for a weekly art project since the program was affected by budget cuts.
Alicia decided to return to the workforce in 2005 once her children were a little older. She worked for The T.I.R.R. Group, Inc. and Veterans Transition Services, Inc. as an office manager/IT and contract manager from 2005 until 2011.
Alicia’s hobbies include reading, scrapbooking and the organization/planning of parties/events for any and all occasions. She also loves sharing ideas, and meeting for coffee with other military spouses on a weekly basis.
