The 32nd annual Surface Line Week (SLW) kicked off in San Diego Aug. 1 with a sailing competition.

SLW, sponsored by Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet (SURFPAC), runs through Aug. 9, and features a series of activities dedicated to friendly competition in a variety of professional and sporting events.

“It is exciting to see members of the Surface Warfare community come together and compete outside the lifelines,” said SLW coordinator, Lt. Alexis Steele. “This gives Sailors a unique opportunity to represent their command and foster camaraderie on the waterfront.”

Professional events include shiphandling, welding and cutting, marksmanship, and a damage control marathon, and the athletic events include soccer, basketball, volleyball and physical excellence.

“Nothing beats seeing Sailors compete within their skill set in the professional events” said Steele. “They all take such pride in demonstrating high quality workmanship and professional knowledge while competing for the top awards.”

Last year, USS Essex (LHD 2) took first place in the overall large command category, USS Halsey (DDG 97) won for the medium commands and Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group 1 received the small command trophy.

“We are looking forward to a record-breaking turnout this year and it’s thanks to the hard work of the coordinators from 42 commands across San Diego” said Steele. “Their hard work ensured over 3,600 participants signed up for 31 events. Without the numerous volunteers, Surface Line Week would not be possible.”
