USS Sampson Assists in AirAsia Search

USS Sampson (DDG 102) arrived on station in the Java Sea on Dec. 30 to assist in the search for missing AirAsia Flight QZ8501. This comes at the request of the Government of Indonesia, as directed by U.S. Pacific Command.

Sampson’s MH-60R search and rescue helicopters were launched to assist multiple Indonesian assets. The search teams did discover debris late last night. The ship and her helicopters are still on station and continue to search in close coordination with Indonesian authorities.

USS Sampson is homeported in San Diego and is in the midst of an independent deployment to the Western Pacific.
